European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats officially opens in Helsinki

On 2 October, the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats was officially opened in Helsinki, Finland.

The centre was opened and speeches were given by the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and the Prime Minister of Finland Juha Sipilä.

On behalf of the country, the President of Finland thanked the Governments of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, France and Spain for their contribution to the establishment of the centre.

The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted that the centre should become a platform for sharing the NATO-EU information and experience, and for working closely with other NATO’s Centres of Excellence in the Baltic states.

The opening ceremony was also attended by the Ambassador of Lithuania to Finland Valdemaras Sarapinas, the Director of the Vilnius-based NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence, Colonel Gintaras Bagdonas and the Legal Advisor Renata Vaišvilienė.

The Centre of Excellence centre that was set up in our region will allow the Nordic and Baltic countries, and Poland to update topics relating to the fight against hybrid threats in a broader context, and to draw attention to security challenges of the Baltic Sea region, including Russia’s information warfare, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, energy security, etc. The centre will open up an opportunity for Lithuanian experts to engage into the fight against hybrid threats, also to share Lithuania’s practice and experiences.
