Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry summons Russian Ambassador, hands in diplomatic note over airspace violation

On 18 September, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Lithuania Alexander Udaltsov was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and was handed a diplomatic note over a violation of the Lithuanian airspace.
The incident took place in the evening on 16 September, when two Russian military aircrafts IL-76 entered Lithuania’s airspace and stayed there for up to 2 minutes. The aircrafts were flying from the main part of Russia to the Kaliningrad region.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania expressed its protest to the Russian Ambassador and requested competent Russian authorities to provide an explanation over the incident as soon as possible. In addition, Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry called on Russia to take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
