230th anniversary of the Constitution of 3 May

The Constitution of 3 May 1791 was the first written Constitution in Europe and the second in the world (after the United States).

Among the initiators of this document were the last king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Stanislaw August Poniatowski, educator and publicist Hugo Kolontajus, and other nobles of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The mutual Pledge of the Commonwealth of the Two Nations apdopted on October 20, 1791 laid the foundations for the civic political identity in Lithuania and Poland. The ideas and the spirit of the Constitution continue to inspire our countries up to this day.

The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania declared 2021 the year of the Constitution of 3 of May and the mutual Pledge of the Commonwealth of the Two Nations.
