Lithuanian Seimas delegation held meetings with Armenian officials
On 18-19 November, during the working visit to Armenia, the delegation from the Lithuanian Parliament, led by Vice-Speaker of the Seimas Andrius Mazuronis, held meetings with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan, Vice-President of the National Assembly Ruben Rubinyan and the Friendship Group with Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia of the National Assembly of Armenia led by Anush Begloian.
“We have a lot of potential and space to expand practical cooperation between Lithuania and Armenia. The process of democratic reforms in Armenia, as well as the implementation of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive Enhanced Partnership Agreement, are major drivers for this. Despite being geographically distant from each other, we share common European values and cultural, artistic and scientific links. Let us promote and foster this together”, - said A. Mazuronis.
During the meetings, the delegation was briefed about the recent escalation along the border with Azerbaijan and wider security developments in the region, discussed existing and potential areas of bilateral cooperation, country's relations with the European Union (EU), the Armenian democratic reform agenda.
Discussing relations between Armenia and EU, Vice-Speaker of the Seimas noted: “We are ready to be good friends of Armenia in the EU and to continue encouraging a greater focus of the EU on the region. Lithuania supports the strengthening of Armenia’s relations with the EU, actively advocates for increasing EU support for Armenia’s democratic reform agenda, as well as the EU’s role in contributing to the stabilisation of the situation on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and promoting the restoration of trust in the region”.
Both sides also reflected on the important bilateral anniversaries of this year: 30 years anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and 30 years anniversary of mutual recognition, with Lithuania becoming the first country in the world to recognize Armenia’s independence.
Vice-Speaker of the Seimas also presented the situation on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, and thanked Armenian officials for the support of Armenia by sending a Kurdish interpreter.
